WMSR Remains On Schedule To Debut Steam Engine 1309

April 26th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Despite some reports to the contrary, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad remains on schedule to debut steam engine 1309 during the long July 4th holiday weekend. Railroad General Manager John Garner tells WCBC News that restoration efforts on the massive locomotive have been challenging- but plans remain firm for the first run on Saturday July 6th….

The 1949 Baldwin steam engine has been dubbed Mountain Thunder.  There were some erroneous media reports this week suggesting the opening would be delayed until later in July, but Garner says that is not the case and Maryland Thunder will be ready to roll to help celebrate Independence Day weekend…

The excursions to the Frostburg Depot by Maryland Thunder will be called the Allegheny Mountain Express.

It’s called Maryland Thunder, not Mountain Thunder.

And what a grand sight it will be to see that huge, majestic locomotive backing down the mountain from Frostburg to Cumberland.
It seems that no none knew, or cared that the giant engine was just too physically large to fit on the turntable in order to make the return trip down the mountain.
    Excellent planning and execution.
