With the federal government on the brink of a shutdown, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he’s not on board with tax dollars being spent on President Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Manchin, one of the few Democratic allies of Trump in Congress, said Thursday that despite his tough stance on immigration, he won’t support a spending bill that pays for the wall.
“With so many things that we’re cutting, so many budget cuts that are going on, why should we be putting the money up for the wall?” Manchin said while attending the GEAR UP Career Academy at the Charleston Civic Center on Thursday.
Congress is out on its Easter recess. It reconvenes April 24 and will have five days to pass a spending bill or a continuing resolution for federal spending, or else the government will shut down.
Though Manchin aligns with his party on the border wall, he breaks when it comes to defense spending.
