Despite its stock plummeting in recent weeks on Wall Street, Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine says that the Luke Mill isn’t in danger of being shutdown. Speaking during the most recent commissioners meeting held at the Midland Town Hall, Valentine said although the fiscal problems of Luke’s parent company Verso have made headlines- the local mill has a great future. The discussion was sparked by comments made by a Frostburg man who said that falling stock price and layoffs at Kentucky and Maine plants by Verso Paper Corp., the parent company of the Luke mill, made him wonder about the prospects for the local mill. Valentine made mention of a recent meeting with Luke Mill officials that included Maryland’s secretary of Business and Economic Development- and much of that session focused on plans for major capital improvements to the local facilities…
