WBAL reports some students at the University of Maryland College Park were being forced to move out of their dorm and into a hotel room Monday after mold was found all over the building.
Students in Elkton Hall moved out just weeks after moving in for the start of the school year.
"I'm actually comfortable in my dorm room. Now I have to move out to the hotel and take all my items with me," said student Tyrin Gray.
Mold is growing in the dorm, exacerbated by all the rain and humidity. Students said it has gotten on their bags, clothes, window blinds and walls, making some of them sick.
"I also have severe lung spasms now that require me to use an inhaler every four to five hours," said student Jessica Mendez.
"I had a rash on my leg, my throat was hurting so bad I couldn't swallow, so I thought I was really sick. I was so tired, runny nose, I was congested, so I had to get on medicine for that, but it turns out it's just from the mold," said student Daniella Cohen.
The university has the residents moving out one floor at a time over the next couple of weeks and into a hotel room for several days.
"I'm taking a bunch of clothes and school stuff and shower stuff and just the essentials really," said student Trevor Hodge.
Everything else has to be boxed up and moved out while the mold is remediated.
The university released a statement apologizing for the inconvenience, saying, "We have taken a number of steps to address the issue, including hiring contractors who specialize in mold remediation, installing commercial grade dehumidifiers in floor hallways, conducting inspections of rooms that have reported service requests, cleaning all surfaces and cleaning or replacing furniture."
But Cohen has to live there all week before her floor moves out this weekend.
"It's so gross to think about. I'm so disgusted to even walk in the dorm and think about how there's mold and to breathe in the mold. It's just gross," Cohen said.
