Westbound I-68 will temporarily become a single lane in Cumberland August 9 through 15 due to continued work on the bridges over Patterson Avenue and Kelly Boulevard.
The lane reduction will begin at 4 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, and continue through noon on Friday, August 15. The work schedule is weather-dependent and could be delayed or extended by rain. The reduction closes one lane of westbound I-68 only. The maximum width for wide loads will be 14 feet.
The lane closure will allow crews pour concrete for the final sections of the new bridge decks (driving surfaces) as part of a Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) project to rehabilitate the two bridges.
In addition, Patterson Avenue will be closed at the I-68 overpass between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights, August 11 and 12.
The $10 million project began in the summer of 2013 and is expected to be complete in late November, weather permitting. Crews have been working to replace the bridge deck in several stages. When the current section is complete, traffic lanes will be shifted and crews will begin the final stage of the project, which includes replacing the median barrier between the eastbound and westbound lanes.
