Neither driver was injured just before daylight Thursday when a tractor-trailer traveled out of control on eastbound Interstate 68 at LaVale and, minutes later, a tractor-trailer became stuck in the underpass at Greene Street on the west side of the city. The Cumberland Times News reports the initial accident occurred on eastbound I-68 just east of Vocke Road at about 5:40 a.m., prompting alert of the LaVale Volunteer Fire Department, the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team and the Maryland State Highway Administration. Maryland State Police investigated and remained at the scene at that hour. Another rig was sent to the scene to take its cargo, said to be a non-hazardous petroleum-based substance, according to a 911 dispatcher. One lane of eastbound I-68 remained open to traffic throughout the accident. In the city, traffic was shut down on Greene Street in the area of Chase Street after a tractor-trailer carrying bottled water attempted to pass through the railroad underpass. The trailer height exceeded the span's allowable height for vehicles and the trailer was reportedly destroyed upon impact. Cumberland Police investigated and controlled traffic through the area.
