The Mineral County Healthy Lifestyles Coalition, in partnership with the Mineral Daily News Tribune and the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting a Substance Abuse Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, October 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Keyser High School (KHS).
The coalition encourages everyone from throughout the region to attend this educational town hall meeting.
Dr. Alfgeir Kristjansson, an associate professor at the WVU School of Public Health, will be sharing information about the successful Icelandic drug-prevention model that is being implemented in West Virginia schools. In Iceland, drug, alcohol and tobacco use in teens has been “virtually eradicated” as a result of a nationwide push to replace teens’ unsupervised, aimless leisure time with purposeful, organized activities. Now, Kristjansson, a West Virginia University researcher is transplanting the program to West Virginia.
Also speaking at the Town Hall event will be Chief Deputy Keith Anderson from the Mineral County Sheriff’s Department who will share information about substance abuse in Mineral County and how increased awareness can help curb drug trafficking in the county.
Sharing his story about the cost of addition and road to recovery will be Christian “Lucky” Arnold, a 2008 KHS graduate who excelled in academics and sports and was known as the “model student” among high school teachers.
The Mineral County Healthy Lifestyles Coalition thanks the following sponsors for helping to make this event possible: Mineral County Board of Education, Mineral County Family Resource Network, Mineral County Health Department, Western Maryland Health System, WVU Medicine/Potomac Valley Hospital, and Youth With a Mission.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a “meet and greet” with representatives from approximately 15 substance abuse resource and recovery organizations who will be on hand to share information.
