Delegate Mike McKay said this week that although dissolving Canal Place is one alternative that a task force will study- it is not the preferred course of action. In early November members of the Western Maryland legislative delegation informed the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority that they are forming a task force to study the future of Canal Place. Canal Place, owned by the state, was created in 1993. The 11-acre property features the railway station, two structures containing shops, a canal boat replica, festival grounds and the Footer’s Dye Works Building. The state has invested more than $30 million in Canal Place since purchasing the site. The delegation members are planning to submit a bill that would authorize the formation of a six-person task force to study the state’s investment in Canal Place. McKay said the state is reluctant to continue funding Canal Place and that is why it’s time to re-evaluate the business plan that has been in place…
