On October 15th at approximately 2:05pm Deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to assist fire and EMS units with a reported truck fire in the 24000 block of Bartlett Run Road, Barton. While enroute to the scene Allegany County 911 advised the truck had possibly exploded and both the truck and occupant were in the Bartlett Run stream.
Upon the arrival of fire units from the Barton Hose Company and the Potomac Volunteer Fire Department it was advised that there was no fire, no explosion and that a commercial dump truck had left the roadway and crashed into the Bartlett Run stream. Fire command further advised of a single patient on scene. Upon arrival of Tri Towns EMS, the patient was evaluated and transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Upon the arrival of deputies an accident investigation was initiated. Due to a commercial vehicle being involved deputies requested assistance from the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Division. Upon arrival of Commercial Vehicle Division Trooper, a joint investigation was launched. Preliminary findings of the investigation revealed the commercial dump truck was traveling east on Bartlett Run Road down a grade and that the operator lost control striking the guardrail, overturning over a ten (10) foot flood control wall and landing in the Bartlett Run stream. The commercial dump truck sustained severe damage as a result of the accident however no hazardous materials were spilled into the stream.
The commercial dump truck was removed from the stream by OK Towing and Recovery and transported to a secure location where it will be inspected as part of the investigation. The accident remains under investigation and further details will be released upon completion of the investigation.
