After having run unopposed in both the 2014 primary and general elections- Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson will see a challenge next year as retired Maryland State Trooper Jason Merritt has filed. Merritt served as a Master State Trooper and recently retired after nearly 28 years on the job. He will run for sheriff as a republican. A Cumberland native who resides in town with his wife and four children, Merritt describes himself as being “very conservative” politically and says he felt he was “called” to run for the office. Not surprisingly, Merritt identifies the growing heroin epidemic as the top priority of law enforcement. Having worked 18 years as a narcotics investigator, he believes, gives him the necessary experience to begin to address the crisis as sheriff…
