SHA addressing safety issues on MD 51

January 29th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will install intersection warning beacons at the MD 51 (Oldtown Road) intersection with Mexico Farms Road and Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) Road. MDOT SHA will design and construct the highway safety enhancements and the systems will be operational this fall.

“The flashing beacons will activate when vehicles on the side roads approach the intersection, warning drivers on each road to use caution,” said MDOT SHA District 6 Engineer Anthony K. Crawford.

The beacons will flash yellow to alert drivers on MD 51 when vehicles are detected at the side road intersections. Similarity, beacons on Mexico Farms Road and Pittsburgh Plate Glass Road will alert drivers waiting to turn that vehicles are approaching on MD 51. The cost to purchase and install the warning beacons is approximately $200,000.
