Last week’s two day swing through Garrett and Allegany counties by Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford- according to at least a few local representatives- presented further evidence that the so-called “war on rural Maryland” is over. Local officials often felt ignored and even neglected during the eight years of the Martin O’Malley administration. In 2009, then Governor O’Malley made the decision to close the visitor center at Sideling Hill- an action that many saw as a symbolic gesture by O’Malley dismissing the western region.  Shortly after taking office in 2015, Governor Larry Hogan re-opened the visitors’ center announcing that areas such as Allegany and Garrett County are not forgotten.
