More than 150 school board members and other education leaders from across the state gathered recently for the Maryland Association of Boards of Education Annual Conference- and a former Allegany County School Board member was among those honored. The 2018 MABE Distinguished School Board Service Award recipient Dr. Edward Root was honored for his extraordinary contribution to Maryland public schools through school board service. Root was dean of the College of Education at Frostburg State from 1987 to 1995. He also served on the Maryland State Board of Education from 1999 to 2007, including a stint as state board president from 2003 to 2007. In 2010, Root was elected to the Allegany County Board of Education and was re-elected in 2012.
