The Office of the State’s Attorney for Allegany County, Michael O. Twigg, State’s Attorney, announced on Thursday, May 9, 2019, that Jennifer Lynn Snyder, 36 of Cumberland, was convicted of robbery in the Allegany County Circuit Court. The Honorable Judge W. Timothy Finan sentenced Snyder to 10 years in the Maryland Department of corrections, suspending four years of the sentence. Snyder was on probation at the time, and during a subsequent hearing in that case, Judge Finan imposed an additional 18 month sentence to be run consecutively to the sentence in the robbery case, for a total of 7 ½ years of incarceration.
On November 12, 2018, a woman entered the Cumberland City Police Department and reported she had just been robbed. While traveling on Henderson Avenue, she had been waved down by Snyder, whom she did not know. It was raining and Snyder asked the woman for a ride. Upon entering the vehicle, they turned onto Marietta Street at the direction of Snyder, who then reached over and turned off the ignition of the vehicle. At that time Snyder demanded money from the woman, took her purse and exited the vehicle. Video surveillance in the area was recovered by officers, who were able to identify Snyder in the area at the time. The victim was shown the video and positively identified Snyder as her assailant.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Erich Bean, who prosecuted the case “Once Ms. Snyder completes her prison sentence, she will be placed on supervised probation for five years, ordered to complete treatment for substance abuse issues, and have no contact with the victim in the case. If she violates in any way, she will face the reimposition of the four years Judge Finan suspended. I’m thankful the victim was not injured, and it’s sad that an act of kindness led to such inexcusable behavior on the part of Ms. Synder.”
The Cumberland City Police Department investigated the case. Snyder was represented by David Schram of the Public Defender’s Office.
