Repeated postponements and ongoing renovation delays with Mountain Thunder- the massive 1949 Baldwin steam locomotive expected to jump start business for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad- is becoming a cause for concern for some elected officials. The latest delay has centered on the need to repair a stretch of the track- with new ties, spikes and plates needed. Cumberland, Frostburg and Allegany County governments have all committed funding to cover the cost. The repairs means the July Fourth holiday debut of the steam engine will not happen- with the latest announced date being sometime in late July. Privately officials remain skeptical of the steam engine running anytime soon- with one telling WCBC News that he would be surprised if it ran this year. Cumberland City Councilman Eugene Frazier is a member of the WMSR board and was asked about the numerous delays. His response could hardly be viewed as a vote of confidence as he declined to comment- choosing instead to focus on the agenda action to approve funding for the repairs…
