Goucher College pollster Mileah Kromer says there's a real appetite in Maryland for redistricting reform. Nonpartisan redistricting, a cause long championed by Republican Governor Larry Hogan, is something that's seen little progress in the Democratic General Assembly. However, in a Goucher poll last spring, 75 percent of registered voters said Maryland's redistricting process should be handled by an independent commission. Republicans have argued that the state’s 6th Congressional District- Western Maryland- is one of the more gerrymandered in the nation. In 2012 it was changed from solid "red" to mostly "blue"- which many claim led to the defeat of longtime incumbent Republican Representative Roscoe Bartlett (MD-6) by Democrat John Delaney.
