On May 9, 2019 at 6:00 a.m., officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 400 block of Furnace Street for a breaking and entering. When officers arrived on the scene they learned that a male suspect wearing a mask forced in the rear door of the victims residence. The male then proceed toward the victim wielding a knife. The suspect then swung the knife striking the door jamb causing the knife to break. After breaking the knife the suspect fled the scene. Due to the victim’s statements, officers were able to quickly identify Clifton Martin, age 30 of Cumberland, Maryland, as a potential suspect.
Officers then responded to a residence in the 400 block of Columbia Street to continue their investigation. Once there they made contact with Martin and located evidence related to the crime. Subsequently, Martin was arrested and charged with home invasion, first degree burglary, third degree burglary, fourth degree burglary-dwelling, forth degree burglary-theft, assault first degree, assault second degree, reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property less than $1000, and disorderly conduct. Martin was later taken for his Initial Appearance and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.
