On 10/17/19 the Cumberland Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Safety Campaign in which officers manned several crosswalks within the city handing out educational brochures to both pedestrians and vehicle operators. As a result of the initiative officers distributed 152 brochures and reflective florescent backpacks provided by the Maryland Highway Safety Office to pedestrians utilizing crosswalks. Officers distributed 227 brochures to vehicle operators within these intersections at red lights. Officers also conducted 14 vehicle traffic stops for violations ranging from crosswalk violations to distracted driving. The initiative was made possible by grant funding from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
