It’s been a little more than a year since the new 70 mph speed limit on  Interstate 68 and other parts of Maryland went into effect- and early indications are that the change has not led to any serious problems. It was  October 1 last year that the maximum speed limit in the state increased from 65 mph to 70 mph. Supporters of the law, including its sponsor Senator George Edwards, argued that  numerous highways in adjacent states, including West Virginia and Virginia, are posted at 70 mph and that Maryland highways should be consistent. There was some opposition from democrats, most of them raising questions about the increased risk of fatal accidents.
