Officer Edward Nero's trial in the arrest of Freddie Gray continued Tuesday with witnesses taking the stand for the defense, after prosecutors rested their case Monday. Nero, 30, one of six Baltimore police officers charged in Gray's arrest and death, is being tried alone and has selected a bench trial — leaving his legal fate solely in the hands of Circuit Judge Barry Williams, rather than a jury. He is charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office in connection with Gray's initial detention and arrest, as well as reckless endangerment and a second misconduct charge related to Gray's placement in the back of a police transport van without a seat belt.
