On Sunday, May 29th 2016 at approximately 1257 hours, Troopers from the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack responded to a motor vehicle collision on eastbound interstate 70, east of Crystal Falls Dr. Upon arrival on scene, Troopers located a white Freightliner Tractor-Trailer and a white Honda CRV on the right shoulder of the roadway. The white Honda CRV was wedged under the rear of the Freightliner and the driver was entrapped. Investigation revealed the CRV, driven by Ann Hegnauer, was traveling East on I-70 in lane 2 when the Honda collided with the rear of the tractor trailer, driven by Richard Shaffer. The cause of the collision is still under investigation and an accident reconstructionist from the Maryland State Police is assisting with the investigation.
Washington County and Frederick County Fire/EMS Personnel responded to the scene and successfully extricated Hegnauer from the Honda after approximately 45 minutes. Maryland State Police Trooper 2 transported Hegnauer to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore for treatment of her injuries. Shaffer was not injured as a result of the collision. The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed intermittently for approximately two hours while the investigation was completed.
