On 09/26/214 at approximately 1148hrs Troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to a five (5) vehicle collision on I-70 west in the area of MD Rt 66 (Mapleville Road).
The investigation into the collision revealed that a Dodge Caravan had been traveling West on I-70 in Lane #1 (fast lane). The Dodge was being operated by a driver out of West Virginia. Also traveling in Lane #1 behind the Dodge was a 2004 Ford F350 being occupied by Thomas Smith, 54, and Terry Smith, 53, of Centreville, MD. Traveling behind the F350 also in lane #1 was a 2012 Toyota Rav 4 operated by Kelly Handy, 52, of Frederick, MD. Traveling behind the Rav 4 was a 2001 Ford F150 occupied by Ronald Marteney, 58, and Darlene Marteney, 55, of Garrett PA. Traveling behind the F150 was a 2001 Infinity Qx4 occupied by Michael Hamilton, 20, of Millersville, MD and Ciara Guihen, 19, of Silver Spring, MD.
When vehicles came upon heavy traffic the Dodge slowed and was struck in the rear by the F350. Handy stated she had been able to stop prior to hitting the F350 but was struck in the rear by the F150 pushing her into the F350. After striking the Toyota the F150 was struck in the rear by the Infinity. The Dodge, the F350 and the Toyota remained in the roadway after the collision while the F150 came to rest backwards on an embankment in the center median and the Infinity rolled onto the driver’s side in the center median.
Handy, Ronald and Darlen Marteney and Guihen were transported to Meritus Medical Center all with non-life threatening injuries.
I-70 in the area of MD Rt 66 was closed intermittently until 1300 hours for the removal of the vehicles. Maryland State Highway personnel assisted with traffic control.
The investigation is still on going as to charges being filed against any of the drivers Investigating Trooper: Trooper First Class B. Fogle, Maryland State Police
