WBAL reports rather than continue a standoff with Gov. Larry Hogan, Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles rescinded an order prohibiting private schools from opening at the start of fall classes.
The decision was made in light of state policy, announced Thursday, prohibiting county officials from ordering the blanket closure of nonpublic schools.
On Monday, Gov. Larry Hogan issued an executive order clarifying that decisions on whether schools can open or not are up to individual school systems or private schools, not county governments.
Gayles continues to advise schools against in-person learning due to coronavirus risks, county officials said in a statement.
