The Allegany County NAACP and Allegany College of Maryland’s Democracy Commitment team will hold a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The event will be held Jan. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zimmer Theatre on the campus of Allegany College of Maryland. It will feature a dramatic presentation of King’s historic “I Have A Dream” speech by the Rev. Darin Mency. During the program, Allegany County NAACP Branch President Carmen B. Jackson will announce the recipients of the first NAACP Scholarship program awards and provide application information for the 2017 scholarship program. Officers for the new term will be installed and include Carmen B. Jackson, president; Pastor Martha Bell, vice president; Darrell Lee Powell, treasurer; and Joy Kroeger-Mappes, secretary. The program is free and open to the public.
