The Mineral County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to scrap plans to close the Mineral County Alternative School, reducing the impact of an original downsizing plan that would have terminated 32 employees.Based on budget concerns, The Cumberkland Times News reports Shawn Dilly, the superintendent of schools for Mineral County, had developed a plan to downsize the school system that called for 77 actions including 32 job reductions and 45 transfers. The plan also included closing the alternative school on Clary Street. Tempers flared at Tuesday evening’s board meeting when more than 100 people attended with the majority protesting the plan’s job reductions and transfers. The downsizing plan will be re-evaluated with a lower number of reductions and transfers expected. The next regular meeting of the school board will be held March 3 and a special hearing on the downsizing plan is scheduled for March 10.
