In 2009, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley closed the visitor center at the Sideling Hill cut, the symbolic gateway to Western Maryland, as a cost-saving effort. Some saw the move as personal, or at least payback as the region of the state overwhelmingly rejected O’Malley in his election bid. The so-called “war on rural Maryland” was in high gear at that point, but not so much these days. Maryland Senate President Mike Miller tells WCBC News that he believes the situation has improved under the Hogan administration- primarily because a big part of Hogan’s base of support comes from the rural parts of the state…
