More than 37,000 Marylanders filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week. State labor officials said that number is down by nearly half from the previous week. However, that week's numbers are subject to federal review based on Wednesday's revelation of massive unemployment fraud. Of the more than 37,000 new claims, 216 were from Allegany County.
