Just beyond the halfway point in Maryland's four-day 2016 bear season, hunters in the state set a record for the number of harvested animals. The Cumberland Times News reports on Wednesday morning, Paul Peditto, Maryland's Wildlife & Heritage Service director, tweeted: "Frost & fog greet western MD for penultimate day of '16 bear hunt. 111 bears checked = new state record with 2 days to go. " The second day of Maryland's four-day 2016 bear hunt on Tuesday included a variety of interesting events and stories of family history. At roughly 2 p.m., Harry Spiker, Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service's black bear project leader, said 88 bears had been checked in for the season's total so far.
As of about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Spiker said this year's total harvest reached 109 bears.
