March for Justice brings hundreds to downtown Cumberland

June 19th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Several hundred participated in Friday's March for Justice rally sponsored by Allegany County Branch of the NAACP.  Registration began at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cumberland and made their way to City Hall Plaza where speakers talked about the significance of Juneteenth, the holiday celebrating the liberation of those who had been held as slaves in the United States.

A tribute to George Floyd also was conducted. Floyd was the African American man killed by police during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25. Signs with slogans such as “Black Lives Matter”; “I Can’t Breath” and “We Will Not Be Silent” were on display and vehicles traveling through downtown blew their horns in support. Despite rumors of possible outside groups disrupting the event, the march and ceremony were peaceful and uninterupted.

And a pastor gave a prayer. No doubt one of those ‘outside agitators’ I bet. (even though he was a local) smh

Yes, a very peaceful march attended by well over 300 local citizens. Folks were given opportunities to complete Census forms prior to the march. Such critical information will benefit Allegany County. Very good event for our community.

      > Like all of our political and business leaders, you only like ‘out of towners’ when they come to spend money here. Fear not, I’m sure everyone stopped at Sheetz and had coffee, two hot dogs and bought some gasoline. That’s what our tourist economy is built for – nothing else. Be glad they showed up here, instead of going to the lake for better pizza. Next time, we should have the train up and running and we can all do a ‘freedom run.’

Every American has the right to demonstrate against any injustice anywhere in the country – even here.

Gay Pride group tried to ruin the event. They need just stay out of it. Simple. Don’t try to take credit and steal the spotlight.
