Chelsea Manning, the transgender former Army private who was convicted of passing classified government documents to WikiLeaks, has filed as a Democrat to run for the United States Senate in Maryland.

Manning would be a primary opponent of Ben Cardin, who is in his second term and is the ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
