Early Monday morning, at 3:10 AM, a Cumberland Police officer on patrol observed 2 vehicles traveling in the area of North Centre Street operating recklessly. Officers stopped the vehicles and discovered that the 38 year old male passenger in one of the vehicles had a head injury and claimed he had been assaulted with a machete by the man in the second vehicle. The Cumberland Fire Department responded and transported the victim to the hospital.
Officers continued the investigation which revealed that the man had gotten into an argument with Lionel Craig Younger, age 64, of Cumberland at a North Centre Street residence. The victim reported that he was allegedly assaulted with a machete and a baseball bat. CPD Officers along with C3I Detectives and the Maryland State Police Crime Lab executed a search warrant at the North Centre Street residence where they recovered evidence of the crime.
As a result of the investigation, Lionel Craig Younger, was arrested and charged with:
Attempted murder
Felony assault
Misdemeanor assault
Mr. Younger was taken before the District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond.
The victim was treated and released from the hospital.
