‘Lucky 33′ House Owners Have Day in Court

August 6th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Robert Lee Detrick, 71, and Carol Jean Detrick, 61 had their day in court Monday- facing 66 charges of animal cruelty. The charges were filed by the C3I Unit through a summons that was issued by a district court commissioner June 26. In early June, authorities seized 33 dogs from the Detrick’s than vacant residence at 661 Greene Street in Cumberland and immediately provided emergency medical care to the dogs, all of whom were suffering from various health issues after being left unattended in the West Side property. The dogs, dubbed the Lucky 33 by animal welfare officials, ranged in ages from 2 weeks to 10 years.   Mr. Detrick went before Judge Jack Price and was sentenced to serve 33 days in jail beginning  immediately. After he serves his time, he will be on probation for three years and cannot ever own another animal.  Mrs. Detrick asked for a continuance.  Dr Becky Beaten, a licensed psychologist  who specializes in hoarding- and a regular contributor to the “Hoarders: Buried Alive” TV Show- recently talked with WCBC News. She said that while it is easy to demonize the couple- often times because of  an illness, animal hoarders believe they are helping the animals- not hurting them…
