It was in October of 2012; the City of Cumberland announced its participation in the State of Maryland’s, Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention, Safe Streets initiative. Despite the perception by some that the program isn’t working- Allegany County Circuit Court Judge Jeff Getty thinks otherwise. The State initiative was designed to create a format where all public agencies can work together to reduce crime and improve the quality of local neighborhoods- targeting habitual or repeat offenders. Allegany County Callers to WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” routinely express their frustration upon learning that someone with a long criminal history has been picked up by law enforcement again, only to be released pending trial.
