Hyndman train derailment

December 30th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

A train traveling through Hyndman derailed Friday evening, a Bedford County 911 emergency dispatch supervisor said. A call came in from CSX at 7:40 p.m. about a derailment south of town at the intersection near Pelican and Cooks Mill Road in Londonderry Township. The Johnstown- Tribune Democrat reports the derailment consisted of four tanker cars with hazmat placards.

No information was released on what the tankers were filled with, but there are no leaks at the time, the 911 official said.

The train reportedly consisted of four locomotives, 131 loaded railcars and 44 empty cars.

No injuries were reported, and no evacuations were put in place, the 911 supervisor said.

Part of state Route 96 was closed, and the only access through Hyndman was via Hogback Road.

Hyndman Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene and the Bedford County Emergency Management Agency was en route there.

“CSX is working closely with local firefighters and first responders to assess the situation and the safety of the community and everyone on site is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan,” CSX said in a statement late Friday.

The derailment comes just four months after 32 cars derailed in Hyndman on Aug. 2. At least one home and garage were destroyed and most of the town’s 1,000 residents were evacuated for several days as crews worked to extinguish tanker car fires.
