While members of the District One legislative delegation agreed that the 2016 session of the Maryland General Assembly was generally a good one- the major disappointment was the failure to see highway user funds restored. In the past several years, the Allegany County Commissioners say the county has missed out on millions of dollars for road maintenance and construction as Annapolis kept a larger share of the transportation revenue. For decades, local governments got roughly 30 percent of the money raised from the gas tax and vehicle registration fees, together called "highway user revenue." But the proportion was cut to less than 10 percent in 2010 and has continued to dwindle. While Allegany County just a few years ago received The county’s highway user revenue funds have dropped from $4.6 million in 2008 to just under $500,000 in 2016.
