Gilpin Retires From Orphans Court

August 13th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County Orphans Court Judge Billie Gilpin announced Saturday that she is retiring due to declining health.

In a letter to the citizens of the county, Gilpin writes she is unable to fulfill the remainder of her term.

Originally elected in 1994, Gilpin thanked her family, fellow judges Donna May and Ed Crossland, staff at the Register of Wills office and local attorneys.

The text of the letter is as follows:

It is with regret that I write to inform the citizens of Allegany County that I am retiring after nearly twenty-three years serving as a Judge of the Orphans’ Court. I have recently submitted official notice that due to ongoing health issues, I am unable to fulfill the balance of my term. I believe that given the duties and issues before the Orphans’ Court, this decision is in the best interests of the citizens.

It has been a true honor to serve the citizens, and I am humbled by their confidence in returning me to office each election since 1994. I love the people of our county, and on behalf of myself and my family thank you for your support. I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge the support of my family, including my late husband, Harry Gilpin, my daughters Kelly and Cher and my grandchildren, Joseph and Jordan Readd.

I would also like to thank the local attorneys who have practiced before the Orphans’ Court for their professionalism as well as the staff of the Register of Wills office. It has also been a privilege to serve with Judge Donna May, who I have served with my entire time on the Court, and Judge Ed Crossland, both of whom are friends and colleagues. May God Bless you all.
