Gas prices hold steady

October 13th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Drivers in Maryland should not expect a gas price spike following Hurricane Michael’s path of destruction through the southeastern U.S. this week. Currently, the storm has not affected critical Gulf Coast refineries or pipelines that bring gasoline to the Northeast. However, heavy rain, wind, flooding and power outages may cause delivery disruptions to local gas stations in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama in the coming days, affecting gas prices in those areas.

Today’s national gas price average is $2.91, which is unchanged cents in the last week, up seven cents in the last month, and 43 cents higher than this time last year.

Maryland’s gas average is seven cents less than the national average at $2.84 per gallon, and is the same price as last week and a month ago. Today’s average is 44 cents more than the same time last year on this date. Cumberland prices are down a few cents but still rank as the highest in the state at $2.93

I was in Winchester, VA last week and gassed up at $2.63 per gallon. The prices seemed to run from $2.63 to 2.65, or about 30 cents cheaper than Cumberland.

Gas prices nationally and across most of Maryland shifted into reverse since a week ago, but barely. Last week prices had risen as much as 10 cents per gallon from the prior week. Today, the cost at the pump has dropped since last week by a penny, in some parts of the state, to as much as six cents per gallon, in Salisbury, although prices in some areas remain unchanged. Maryland’s average cost at the pump is two cents lower than the national average at $2.34 per gallon. The state’s cost reflects a penny decrease from a week ago, a 10 cent increase compared to last month’s price and a 23 cent per gallon rise over last year’s price.
