The national average price of gas has remained above $2.00 per gallon since Thursday, March 24, while Maryland’s average price has been trending above that mark for 10 days as of Wednesday, March 23. In Cumberland the price is jumping even faster. Today’s national average price of $2.06 per gallon is up three cents per gallon on the week and 30 cents per gallon for the month. Despite the increases, average gas prices remain 35 cents per gallon less than a year ago.
Maryland’s average price at the pump is two cents higher than the national average at $2.08 per gallon. The state average is five cents higher compared to last week and 33 cents more than last month, but is 30 cents per gallon cheaper than last year on this date. In Cumberland the prices stands at $2.08 per gallon, that is up 10 cents from last week. Every major metro area in Maryland has surpassed the $2.00 per gallon mark with the exception of Salisbury.

Paying $2 for gas will seem like a distant memory for most drivers in the coming weeks. Gas prices across the country have seen significant jumps in the past few weeks, primarily due to refinery outages and issues. The national average has moved higher for 39 consecutive days, the longest streak of increases since February 2013. The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline rose to $2.46 per gallon Friday, nine cents higher than one week ago and 29 cents more than one month ago. However, the national average is $1.01 per gallon lower compared to this date last year, although the year-over-year margin has been narrowing over the last few weeks. Maryland’s average price is also $2.46 per gallon, which is 10 cents more than last week, 27 cents more than one month ago, but $1.02 per gallon less than on this date last year. In Cumberland the price at the pump jumped seven cents from a week ago, standing at $2.45 heading into the weekend.
