Adventure sports such as rock climbing and whitewater paddling are gaining a higher degree of respectability in Maryland's university system. The Board of Regents voted Friday in Bowie to approve a bachelor's degree program in adventure sports management at Frostburg State University. The program would build on an associate's degree that's been offered since 1992 at Garrett College, a community college in nearby McHenry. Proponents say most graduates of the Garrett College program want to earn a bachelor's in adventure sports, and more than 60 percent of them transfer out of state to get one.
Garrett College awards an average of 12 associate degrees in adventure sports per year.
