Frostburg State Football Advances To Elite Eight

November 27th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The 15th-ranked Frostburg football team will travel for the third-straight week in the 2017 NCAA Division III Playoffs and will visit second-ranked Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio this Saturday, Dec. 2 at 12:00 pm.

Frostburg (11-1) received one of five at-large bids to the NCAA Playoffs when the field was announced two weeks ago, while the Purple Raiders (12-0) received an automatic bid after winning the Ohio Athletic Conference for the 28th time.

Frostburg has posted two impressive wins on the road over the first two weekends of the playoffs. In the first round, the Bobcats defeated No. 9 Wittenberg 35-7 after rushing for 385 yards. It was the Tigers' first loss at home since 2014.

Frostburg knocked off No. 10 Washington & Jefferson 46-23, Saturday and ended a 30-game home winning streak for the Presidents.

Frostburg is currently riding a seven-game winning streak of its own and has won 11-straight games away from Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats will carry that momentum into next Saturday's matchup with the second-ranked Purple Raiders, NCAA Division III's all-time winningest program.

The Purple Raiders make their appearance in the quarterfinals after shutting out Washington & Lee 21-0 in the first round and downing Case Western Reserve 45-16 yesterday afternoon.

Mount Union enters the contest with an unblemished 12-0 record and it has been ranked second in both major polls all season. Aside from a home loss late in the regular season a year ago, the hosts haven't lost a home game since week seven of the 2005 season. During that span, Mount Union is 114-1 at home.

Saturday's matchup between Frostburg and Mount Union will serve as the first meeting between the two schools.

Frostburg hasn't lost to a school from the Buckeye State since 1987 when the Bobcats were defeated by Dayton. Since '87, Frostburg is 5-0 against schools from Ohio, most recently defeating Case Western Reserve in both 2012 and 2013, while defeating Wittenberg two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the Purple Raiders have posted over 350 wins since 1987 and have collected 11 undefeated seasons with 12 National Championships. Mount Union has a 96-16 record in the NCAA Playoffs and have appeared in the NCAAs 26-straight seasons.

The winner of Frostburg and Mount Union will advance to the national semifinals and will take on the winner of Wisc.-Oshkosh and Wartburg on Saturday, Dec. 9.
