Franchot Would Like Allegany & Garrett Co. Schools To Start After Labor Day

October 1st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

According to a new study, starting school after Labor Day has been  good for Maryland’s economy,  and while feeling somewhat vindicated by that news,  Comptroller Peter Franchot says he would be even more satisfied if all of the counties chose to participate.  Franchot said the economic benefit comes from added spending at Maryland tourism destinations and added summer employment for Maryland students.  Both Allegany and Garrett counties have requested and received waivers each year of the program due in large part to the number of days already missed each winter because of inclement weather in the region. Franchot told WCBC News he’s like to see the two western most counties in the state join the program…

Many people think Western Maryland starts at Hagerstown. Go West and keep going. Our weather does need to be taken into consideration. Ask the bus drivers who drive the mountains. Ask the students. School will end in mid June or later due to snow days.
    Money versus Mother Nature.

But remember that the more tourism dollars we take in the less taxes we’ll have to pay.

        > That may be the funniest idea I’ve seen today. The willingness of an elected official to diminish education for the opportunity to sell soda’s to tourists passing through town in the name of tourism. It has always been a shabby way to build an economy.

      > The problem isn’t snow, it’s all the bogus off days built into the schedule by the teachers’ unions.

        > There are no ‘teacher union’ days in the schedule. Years ago there was a two day break for a convention in October every year but that has been gone for years. The breaks for development are from the Board – not any union.

I don’t usually agree with Franchot and I think he is arrogant. I agree with him on this matter. Allegany and Garrett Counties could use any, even if small, economic boost. Stop calling off school days because it is “too cold”. Criminally charge parents who fail to appropriately clothe their child.

This is just like the state to demand things of these two counties that don’t apply to the rest of the state families in these two counties would not be able to plan for their summer vacations because they don’t know when the hell the school year will end
