Former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler told WBAL Radio this week he supports the idea of mandatory minimum sentences for repeat violent offenders, which is part of Governor Larry Hogan’s crime proposals. Gansler, who served from 2007 to 2015, said harsher penalties are only part of the solution. Gansler conceded that mandatory minimums generally deserve their bad reputation. The use of mandatory minimums grew in the 1980s after mandatory minimum sentences became part of federal law and states followed suit. A 2018 study by the Pew Charitable Trusts found that higher rates of drug imprisonment were not correlated with lower rates of drug use…

It sure sounds like Doug Gansler would like to be Attorney General again. He argues for both sides of the issue, that way he can keep everybody happy.
He supports the idea of mandatory minimum sentences and then states the mandatory minimums generally deserve their bad reputation.
So he’s all for them unless you don’t like them and then he’s definitely against them.
That’s the typical wishy washy politician doublespeak.
