Longtime Allegany College of Maryland President Dr. Donald Alexander has died.
Current College President Dr. Cynthia Bambara told WCBC Radio that Dr. Alexander passed away Thursday evening at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
Dr. Alexander took the institution from its days as Allegany Community College, transitioning to Allegany College of Maryland. The college library is named after him.
Donald Alexander was at the helm of the college for over 30 years, retiring in 2008. During his tenure academic programs expanded, the physical plant was augmented, and, in tandem with Athletic Director Bob Kirk and Coach Steve Bazarnic, the men's basketball and baseball programs rose to national prominence.
