Maryland Governor, Larry Hogan, recently appointed Flintstone Elementary School principal, Mrs. Sharon Morgan, as one of 25 members on the Maryland Council on Advancement of School-Based Health Centers. The purpose of this Council is coordinating the interagency effort to develop, sustain, and promote quality school-based health centers in Maryland.
The Council will be charged with monitoring activities and range of services of the centers; recommending legislative initiatives; developing and updating a compendium of technical assistance experts to be used as references; monitoring the development of available funds; participating in grand reviews for the development of school-based health care programs; developing strategies for funding and reimbursement of care delivered in the centers; establishing standards of practice; and encouraging the development of models of excellence in the centers.
According to the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, there are more than 60 school-based health centers in the state serving over 30,000 students annually. They provide on-site access to various medical services including general physical health care services, behavioral health services, oral health services, substance abuse services, nutritional services, and more.
Executive Director of the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals, Mr. Steve Hagenbuch, recommended Mrs. Morgan for a seat on the Council. As a member, she will represent principals as these programs are expanded into schools throughout the state. Mrs. Morgan also currently serves as an executive board member of MAESP representing Allegany County.
