It's a relatively new tradition, as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources reports more and more folks are hitting state parks for a First Day Hike.

On January 1^st this year, 25 took a hike at Dan's Mountain, and another 14 at Rocky Gap. In Garrett County, well over a hundred hit the New Year running…or walking…in state parks.
