On 8/3/2017 at approximately 1443 hours the Maryland State Police, Hagerstown Barracks, were dispatched to a single vehicle collision involving a truck-tractor hauling a semi trailer combination that had overturned and traveled down an embankment.
Initial investigation revealed the collision involved a 2017, Volvo truck tractor hauling a 2018 Wabash semi-trailer carrying alcoholic beverages. The driver was identified as Clarence G Bell, 57 years old, of Goshen, NY. On scene investigation revealed the truck tractor was operating in lane #2, north bound on Interstate 81, when it traveled off the roadway and struck a guardrail and continued down a steep embankment. The vehicle overturned as it traveled down the embankment, spilling its cargo and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the injuries sustained in the collision. No witness identified at the scene believed speed was a factor, stating the truck was traveling a normal highway speed at the time of the collision. The investigation is continuing.
