On, Monday, March 11, 2019, at approximately 4:02 pm, Troopers from the Maryland State Police Cumberland Barrack were dispatched to the area of eastbound MD RT. 144 just east of Interstate 68, in Flintstone, Maryland, for a fatal motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival of law enforcement and EMS, two vehicles were involved in the collision. Preliminary investigation, by the Maryland State Police revealed, a Toyota Corolla passenger vehicle, driven by Mark R. Hawkins Sr. 58 years old from Cumberland, MD, was travelling eastbound on MD RT. 144 just east of I-68. When, Mr. Hawkins’s lost control of his vehicle and travelled across the center line and collided with a Chevrolet Equinox SUV, occupied by a driver and passenger from Delaware, who were travelling westbound.
Mr. Hawkins was fatally injured as a result of the collision. Both occupants of the Chevrolet SUV were transported to WMRMC for non-life threatening injuries.
MD. RT. 144 was reopened at approximately 8:00 pm.
