A house fire a week ago today in South Cumberland claimed the life of an 85 year-old city man as well as a family pet. The fire was ruled accidental- but fire investigators believe the tragedy may have been avoidable if there had been working smoke detectors in the home. Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss, the following day, said that the lack of functioning smoke detectors or sometimes no smoke detectors, sadly, is far too common in the city.
