Maryland State Police are investigating the discovery of human remains found Sunday in a state forest in Allegany County.
Shortly after 5:15 p.m. on February 25, 2018, troopers from the Cumberland Barrack received a call from an individual who reported he was exploring in an area of Green Ridge State Forest not far from MV Smith Road, Flintstone, Md. The witness told investigators he found what he believed could be human remains.
Troopers responded and secured the scene. Subsequently, Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators and crime scene technicians, along with investigators from C3I and assistance from Maryland Natural Resources Police, conducted scene processing and recovered what appear to be human remains from within a heavily wooded area.
The remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to attempt to determine the cause and manner of death. A description of the remains is not available at this time. It is not known how long the body had been in the woods. Investigators are hoping the autopsy will provide answers to a number of questions concerning the remains.
The investigation is ongoing.
