An Allegany County Detention Center inmate was being treated for life-threatening injuries after he was found hanging in his cell early Friday. No foul play is suspected, investigators from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit said. The inmate was housed in the cell by himself and the cell door was locked. The 27-year-old was found hanging from a clothing hook 5 feet off the floor with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck about 3:20 a.m. Detention center staff checks cells every half hour through the night, investigators said. The inmate was reportedly checked and awake 20 minutes earlier. Investigators said the inmate was administered CPR and detention center nurses administered aid while awaiting an ambulance crew from Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department, which then took over treatment and transported the inmate to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. The inmate was listed in critical condition Friday.
